The SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet-propelled aircraft ever built, renowned for its unparalleled reconnaissance capabilities. No other aircraft in history has operated so effectively in hostile airspace, making the Blackbird a symbol of Cold War aviation technology.
During this bird's impressive 24 years of active service with the U.S. Air Force, the SR-71 accumulated approximately 2,800 flight hours. On its final mission, on March 6, 1990, pilots Lt. Col. Ed Yeilding and Lt. Col. Joseph Vida shattered speed records by flying from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., in just 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 20 seconds, reaching an astonishing average speed of 3,418 kilometers (2,124 miles) per hour. This iconic flight concluded with a landing at Washington-Dulles International Airport, where the aircraft was later handed over to the Smithsonian Institution.
Physical Characteristics:
The Skunkworks crafted SR-71 features a twin-engine, two-seat design and is crafted primarily from titanium and its alloys, allowing it to withstand the extreme temperatures generated during high-speed flight. Its vertical tail fins are made from a composite material that minimizes radar detection, enhancing its stealth capabilities. The powerful Pratt and Whitney J58 turbojet engines are equipped with large inlet shock cones, further contributing to the aircraft's impressive performance.
