Discover the beauty and tranquility of Marievale Bird Sanctuary in Nigel, Gauteng — one of South Africa’s most remarkable wetland reserves and a highlight for any nature or birdwatching enthusiast. Located on the southern half of the Blesbokspruit wetland, this protected Ramsar site spans around 15 km² and is recognised internationally for its ecological importance.

The sanctuary is home to over 280 bird species, including well-known highlights such as the African marsh harrier, greater flamingo, lesser flamingo, purple heron, and a wide variety of ducks, geese, waders, and raptors. With its mix of reed beds, open water, marshlands, and grasslands, the wetland environment supports an extraordinary level of biodiversity and plays a vital role in the conservation of wetland species in South Africa.

Several bird hides are positioned throughout the reserve, giving visitors incredible opportunities to observe wildlife up close without causing disturbance. While the sanctuary can be enjoyed throughout the year, the summer wet season (November to March) is the best time to visit, as migratory birds arrive and the wetland becomes especially active and vibrant.
