Mistake Number One: The Mysterious Tinder

If you don’t want anyone to know what you look like, you shouldn’t be on tinder. Not only does hiding your face make you look like you’re some kind of secret agent, it makes you look like you’re not serious, you’re cheating, or you’re truly ugly. I promise you he’s picturing something worse when all you show him is the back of your head.

MISTAKE NUMBER TWO: THE RANSOM NOTE

YOUR BIO IS A WAY FOR GUYS TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YOU, NOT A WAY FOR YOU TO RULE OUT GUYS YOU DON’T LIKE. A BIO LIKE THIS IS GOING TO MAKE GUYS SWIPE LEFT EVEN IF THEY DO FIT YOUR CRITERIA.

IT’S GOOD TO HAVE STANDARDS BUT YOU CAN FIND OUT ALL THIS INFORMATION JUST BY HAVING A CONVERSATION AND IT’LL COME OFF WAY LESS HARSH. BUT SPEAKING MORE GENERALLY, YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON WHAT YOU WANT IN A RELATIONSHIP AND WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFER, NOT WHAT YOU DON’T WANT IN A GUY. THIS IS ESPECIALLY CRUCIAL EARLY ON IN THE RELATIONSHIP AND YOU DON’T GET MUCH EARLIER ON THAN YOUR TINDER BIO ON A DATING SITE.

MISTAKE NUMBER 4: TOO MUCH INFORMATION

A BIO SHOULDN’T BE YOUR LIFE STORY. IT SHOULDN’T INCLUDE QUOTES, YOUR TWITTER HANDLE, YOUR EMAIL AND YOUR BLOOD TYPE. IT’S GREAT THAT YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO SHARE BUT SAVE IT FOR THE FIRST DATE. HAVING A GIANT BLOCK OF TEXT HELPS NO ONE.

PLUS, THE MORE YOU PUT IN THERE, THE MORE RED FLAGS YOU MIGHT BE PUTTING UP WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING. I MEAN: FOUR CATS? THAT’S A NO FROM ME. KEEP YOUR BIO TO THE POSITIVE AND MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT IT’S SAYING ABOUT YOU. I’D RECOMMEND ASKING YOUR FRIENDS TO GIVE IT A ONCE OVER. CHANCES ARE THEY HAVE A MORE FLATTERING VIEW OF YOU THAN YOU DO.

Mistake number 5: drawing a blank

Ladies, you need a bio. I know, I know, you’re so unique and wonderful that you can’t be summed up in a few sentences. But if you don’t put something in there, you’re really shooting yourself in the foot. While you might be saying, do people really read the profile anyway? Even if some guys are swiping right without reading your bio, once you match the first thing he’s going to do is go to your profile and look for that bio so he can figure out what he’s going to say to you for the opening message. No bio means he’s either going to make a comment on your appearance, use some canned pick up line, or--most likely--not message you at all.

MISTAKE NUMBER 6: NOTHING FROM THE NECK DOWN

I HATE TO BE THE TYPICAL MALE POINT OF VIEW HERE BUT GUYS ARE LOOKING FOR MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE. THEY ALSO NEED TO SEE WHAT YOUR BODY LOOKS LIKE. BIKINI PICS AREN’T NECESSARY, OR EVEN RECOMMENDED, BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HAVE A FEW PHOTOS THAT SHOW YOUR ENTIRE BODY. IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE ABS OF YOUR DREAMS, THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF GUYS WHO WILL BE WARM FOR YOUR FORM. WHAT GUYS AREN’T ATTRACTED TO IS A FLOATING HEAD.

PROFILE 7: CARLY


This is what a good tinder profile looks like. It’s not perfect but it’s the best we’ve seen.

A few flattering selfies, a few pictures out enjoying yourself with friends and without, a picture that shows your personality

A short bio that shows off your personality and your interests, avoids cliche and meaningless statements and gives your potential matches something to comment on.

I think being a bit self deprecating is a great way to show that you don’t take yourself too seriously.

See how she paints a picture with just a few words? It also doesn’t try to say too much or get too serious. Leave some mystery. This is an introduction, not your life story.
