জোয়ার ভাটা কেন হয়?

পৃথিবীর বাইরের মহাকর্ষীয় শক্তির (বিশেষ করে চাঁদের) প্রভাবে সমুদ্রপৃষ্ঠের জল নিয়মিত বিরতিতে ফুলে ওঠাকে জোয়ার ও নেমে যাওয়ার ঘটনাকে ভাটা বলে। এই দুইয়ের একত্রে জোয়ার-ভাটা বলা হয়। জোয়ার-ভাটার ফলে সমুদ্রে যে তরঙ্গের সৃষ্টি হয়, তাকে জোয়ার তরঙ্গ (Tidal Eaves) বলে।
