A film showing the Flying Scotsman on the Settle to Carlisle line in about 1967 or 1968, but before Alan Pegler's tour of the States. The opening scene was filmed near the Shap Wells Hotel, much altered now by the arrival (along this stretch) of the M6 Motorway which was completed in 1970. The Scotsman is seen arriving at Carlisle station where many spectators, enthusiasts and film crews were in attendance to witness the occasion. I think my dad got into a prime position to film the interview with Alan Pegler and the scene showing the Scotsman leaving Carlisle. The return trip shows the Flying Scotsman passing over the Ribblehead viaduct filmed from three locations. At ground level by Richard Rowley (13 at the time), David Ellwood, (also 13) from the southern embankment and the last shot by my dad which holds position to show the carriages wheels passing over the tracks. Despite the poor light, there is great atmosphere in this film and no high visibility jackets in sight. The next scene shows 4472 heading under a bridge with the flooded valley below. At first glance, it looks like the Ribble valley near Long Preston but on closer inspection using google earth, nothing matches. Please comment if you can correctly identify which stretch of line this is. The penultimate scene shows my brother on Heslaker lane where the rail bridge crosses the River Aire on the Skipton to Colne line. The rail bridge was removed in January 1989, 19 years after the line closure. Contractors paid just One Pound for the structure. The final scene shows us a glimpse of Stanier 47885 heading westbound on the Colne Line near Elslack. Hope you enjoy!
