Breast Cancer, Chemo & Cold Capping,

One year ago this was me—#halloween, dressed up like #wonderwoman, having my 2nd #chemo, & coldcapping to save my hair.

I get asked about it all the time, “How did you not lose all your hair?” “What IS cold-capping?” “How do you #coldcap?” Well, this video from last year shows it all.
•
Chemotherapy is no joke. It’s not fun or strengthening or empowering, or anything you might see in this picture of my “power pose.” Looking back I see that I dressed up, wore a cape, & wore a smile as my mask—because it’s easier to bear something horrible when you can put on a costume to seem strong.
•
Cold-capping helped me feel strong. Challenging & painful & brain-freezing as it was, it gave me a CHOICE. One choice in a sea of so many “this is what you have to do”’s. The choice to keep my hair, or at least try to.
•
It’s not the choice for everyone. It’s not even an option for everyone. It’s incredibly time-consuming, often painful, & can be expensive (insurance often doesn’t cover it), & many drs & cancer centers simply don’t offer it.
•
But I want everyone to at least KNOW about it—to give as many other women this incredible choice, too.
•
Keeping my hair was the one thing chemo couldn’t dismantle. It’s the one REAL thing I got to keep, because I fought for it. So much of #breastcancer is fighting without getting to keep—your breasts, body, ovaries, safety, identity, mind, emotions, & the impact all this has on all around & on YOU.
•
Tonight, I celebrate #halloween in my recliner, still recovering from 12 surgeries & all that’s been taken. I celebrate the last night of #breastcancerawarenessmonth as I celebrate surviving. Surviving chemo. Surviving capping. Surviving hair, body, spirit, surviving ME. 💗
