This exhibition reunites eight of the nine works El Greco created between 1577 and 1579 for the Monastery of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, marking the first time these pieces have been together since their dispersion in the 19th century.

The centerpiece is 'The Assumption of the Virgen', a large canvas that has been part of the Art Institute of Chicago's collection since 1906. Its return to Spain offers a rare opportunity to view it alongside other works from the altarpiece, including 'The Holy Trinity' and 'The Resurrection', which are housed in the Prado Museum and other institutions. Curated by Leticia Ruiz Gómez, head of the Department of Spanish Renaissance Painting at the Prado, the exhibition provides insight into El Greco's early period in Spain, his unique style and innovative approach to religious art.
