STARTING A BORDER FROM SCRATCH

Today I am in my daughter's garden for Phase 1 of creating a border from scratch: Reconnaissance. This is the most important phase of creating a border. You need to measure your area, track the sun (taking into consideration the amount of sun the border will receive -not forgetting winter when the sun is lower in the sky), check to see if any neighbours gardens contain tall trees or structures that will affect sunlight, check soil (clay? sandy? rocky? full of roots?.....), see if you can make use of anything already existing. Draw a diagram/sketch with measurements and any notes you want to include and only then do you head to a garden centre to see if you can pick up some structural plants to start the border with. Once you have those first plants installed then you can take stock of how many more you need and add the "fluff" at a later date.
