Episode 1224

At Benny’s (Jeremy Young) flat, Ray (Neville Buswell) and Len (Peter Adamson) tease Jerry (Graham Haberfield) for learning poetry. Ray uses Benny’s phone to call Sharon Duffy (Susan Littler) and asks her to meet him there. Stan (Bernard Youens) agrees to take on Johnny Owen (Terence Davies) in a beer drinking contest for the Pub Olympics. Ena (Violet Carson) doubts Norma (Diana Davies) is really dedicated to her studies.
Bet (Julie Goodyear) asks Ray to gather intelligence on the Flying Horse team. Ena hints to Ken (Bill Roache) about Jerry’s true motives for learning literature. Ray impresses Sharon by pretending Benny’s flat is his. Jerry tries to ask Norma out but backs out at the last minute. Ernie (Stephen Hancock) agrees to captain the Rovers team. Emily (Eileen Derbyshire) isn’t happy as the contest is on her birthday and Ernie appears to have forgotten. Sharon grows suspicious when she sees a photo of Benny wearing the same clothes as Ray but Ray manages to talk his way out of it. Stan tells Len that bets are being placed over whether he can beat Johnny Owen. Len decides to bet against Stan and make sure he’s in no fit state to participate.
