Posta sul punto più alto del borgo, la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo rappresenta soltanto uno dei capolavori architettonici di Greci.
La Chiesa di San Bartolomeo di Greci è un luogo di culto situato in Via Alessandro Manzoni, nel centro storico del borgo irpino.
Le origini della Chiesa Madre risalgono al Settecento e fu consacrata dal cardinale Orsini, poi eletto Papa Benedetto XIII, che la fece ricostruire in un sito diverso da quello originario, dopo il terremoto che distrusse il vecchio edificio religioso verso fine del Seicento.
La Chiesa, oggi, presenta una pianta a croce latina e una facciata semplice ma imponente, in pieno stile romanico, su cui poggia il campanile, costruito successivamente. All'interno della struttura, costituita da un'unica navata con volta a botte, si trova l’altare maggiore in marmo, di cui si conserva nell'ambiente liturgico la pala artistica attribuibile a Guido Reni (1575-1642). L’antico crocifisso posto all’ingresso della Chiesa risale, invece, al XVIII secolo. Numerose nicchie nelle pareti laterali accolgono le statue dei santi; tra queste, è conservata la statua della Madonna del Caroseno, risalente all’incirca al XIX secolo, di lavorazione irpina, così come la statua lignea di San Bartolomeo, realizzata con legno di quercia e recante i segni del martirio del Santo Patrono del paese, di cui, nel mese di agosto, si rappresenta Il Dramma Sacro di San Bartolomeo.
Located on the highest point of the village, the Church of San Bartolomeo represents only one of the architectural masterpieces of Greci.
The Church of San Bartolomeo di Greci is a place of worship located in Via Alessandro Manzoni, in the historic center of the Irpinia village.
The origins of the Mother Church date back to the eighteenth century and was consecrated by Cardinal Orsini, later elected Pope Benedict XIII, who had it rebuilt in a different site from the original, after the earthquake that destroyed the old religious building towards the end of the seventeenth century.
The Church, today, has a Latin cross plan and a simple but imposing facade, in full Romanesque style, on which rests the bell tower, built later. Inside the structure, consisting of a single nave with a barrel vault, there is the high altar in marble, of which the artistic altarpiece attributed to Guido Reni (1575-1642) is preserved in the liturgical environment. The ancient crucifix placed at the entrance of the Church dates back to the 18th century. Numerous niches in the side walls house the statues of the saints; among these, the statue of the Madonna del Caroseno is preserved, dating back to around the 19th century, of Irpinian workmanship, as well as the wooden statue of San Bartolomeo, made of oak wood and bearing the signs of the martyrdom of the Patron Saint of the town, of which, in the month of August, the Sacred Drama of San Bartolomeo is represented.
