STORYLINE:
People across eastern parts of the world celebrated the New Year on Monday, bringing in 2008 with a range of fireworks displays.
The first big celebration was in New Zealand which held a fireworks display at the 328-metres-high (358 yards) Sky tower in Auckland.
Australians meanwhile greeted the New Year with a spectacular fireworks display over Sydney Harbour.
About a (m) million people were thought to have gathered on the waterfront or aboard three thousand boats to enjoy the annual midnight show.
In South Korea the new year was greeted by the striking of a huge bell 33 times at ImJinGak.
ImJinGak, which is at Paju, 54 kilometres (34 miles) from Seoul, is a symbol of the division of families during the Korean War and is regularly visited on national holidays.
China kick-started its Olympic year with a New Year party that featured fireworks, singing and dancing.
The party, put on by the organisers of the Summer Olympics, saw the people of Beijing brave the cold weather to flock to the so called Millennium Altar.
The Altar is a circular raised stone edifice in west Beijing.
From January 1, there will be 220 days until the start of the August 8-24 Olympics.
In Taiwan the largest building in the world, Taipei's 101 Tower, was set alight with fireworks to welcome 2008.
Thousands of people gathered in front of a stage set up near the tower, and counted down to midnight.
