Many seafood conservation strategies overlook indigenous traditions and knowledge. Historically, environmental racism has led to environmental degradation, unequal access to nature, as well as a whitewashing of academics and the study of wildlife. Conservation efforts may inadvertently promote a "white savior complex" by promoting Western scientific ideals over indigenous practices. For example, red-listing certain areas to prevent overfishing which may bar native inhabitants from a food and economic source they depend on. Meaningful and sustainable change in environmental conservation must include indigenous communities to avoid monolithic solutions that have unintended harmful consequences.
