When Kim Kardashian Wore—and Damaged—Marilyn Monroe’s Iconic Dress
At the 2022 Met Gala, Kim Kardashian turned heads when she stepped onto the red carpet wearing the actual dress Marilyn Monroe famously wore in 1962 to sing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy. The form-fitting, crystal-covered gown was originally designed by Jean Louis and had been preserved for decades as a fragile piece of fashion history—until that night.
Kim borrowed the dress from Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum, which had acquired it in 2016 for nearly $5 million. Because the gown was custom-fitted to Monroe’s body and incredibly delicate, Kim could only wear it for a few moments on the red carpet before changing into a replica. But those few moments were enough to cause irreversible damage.
Photos taken before and after the event revealed noticeable wear—missing crystals, stretched fabric, and small tears near the back closure. Preservationists and Monroe historians were outraged, calling it a reckless stunt that compromised a one-of-a-kind piece of American pop culture.
Kim later defended her decision, saying she lost 16 pounds in three weeks to fit into the dress and treated it with the utmost care. Still, critics argued that no red carpet moment was worth risking such a historic artifact.
What was meant to be a tribute ended up sparking a major debate about celebrity privilege, preservation, and the true cost of chasing viral fashion moments.
