Today, an older man called me to ask for help fixing his chainsaw. He was in the middle of his work when the machine suddenly died, and no matter how many times he pulled the starter, it just wouldn’t start. He pulled so hard that even the recoil spring could no longer return.
When I arrived, he was out transporting wood, so he had left the chainsaw by the roadside for me to check and repair. Seeing the machine lying still in the grass, I couldn’t help feeling a bit sorry for it, and I immediately knew it was really ‘exhausted.’
In reality, with machines like these, about 95% of the issues I encounter are minor faults: the starter rope, spark plug, air filter, or carburetor. Serious problems related to compression or the piston that require opening the entire engine are quite rare. Because once it reaches that stage, the repair cost is almost 70% of a new machine. For many people here, spending that kind of money on fixing an old machine just doesn’t feel worth it, so they often choose to buy a new one instead.
Most of the chainsaws in my area come from China. They’re cheap and easy to buy, but the trade-off is that the parts are not very durable, so minor breakdowns are quite common
