Routines for kids with sensory processing differences are essential to helping them feel safe. Clear expectations of what is happening, what the boundary line is, and how a parent responds to pushing those boundaries gives them something to hold onto securely in a sometimes scary and ever changing environment. Routines are also helpful for our sensory kids who are super distractible, can’t stay on task, and get “lost” on the way from the kitchen to the bathroom. Routines help all kids, and all parents, by clearly marking expectations and allow you as the parent to clearly plan your responses.
This video shares a few tips for making routines more visual for kids, and also sheds light on the importance of parent involvement and presence during the tough spots.
While this video is broad in it’s attempt to meet the needs of any sensory child, if you have questions about a specific routine, needs help problem solving, or don’t know where to start, reach out!
