Join us as we explore Marks Mills State Park, where we discovered a surprising piece of history! It turns out the famous Civil War battle didn't actually happen there, but about two miles east of the park. We took a short trip down the road and found the real battleground.
This place is full of history. The Battle of Marks' Mills was a major Confederate victory on April 25, 1864, during the Camden Expedition. A Union supply train was ambushed by Confederate cavalry, leading to a long, intense fight. We saw monuments and markers that tell the story of the battle, where a large number of Union soldiers were captured.
We also visited the historic Mark's Cemetery. It's not just a cemetery—it's an outdoor museum with memorials, old farm equipment, and interpretive plaques. It's a testament to the Marks family and their dedication to preserving this important piece of local history.
This video is a look at a hidden gem for any history enthusiast, especially if you're interested in the Civil War. Come along with us as we uncover the past and see what it's like to walk on a real battlefield.
