Episode 4 - Maillon verses hanger plate
Here's another instalment of "Breaking Your Gear" featuring some sketchy kit that was passed to me by a caver. You can see other break testing videos in this series on the playlist here: • Breaking Your Gear .
These maillons were removed from fixed rigging in Pwll Dwfn, South Wales. They had been in the cave since 2011 an fixed onto a mix of steel and alloy hanger plates. All 3 had worn deep notches at the contact point and the aim of this test was to see how much the notch affected the strength of the maillons, but importantly, we tested them on hanger plates to simulate the actual situation they were found in.
