The governments recently announced plans for local tv stations are nothing new. They've been happening since the late 1990s. Portsmouth had its own which launched as MyTV Portsmouth (the company also had licences for stations in Southampton and Bournemouth although the latter never went on air).
By 2002 the channel had re-branded as Portsmouth TV, its flagship programme was Portsmouth Tonight which ran for an hour between 5.30 and 6.30, admittedly the quality was less than you'd expect from the likes of ITV but still amazing that they could fill an hour long news programme with relevant material when today ITV Meridian end up bringing stories from as far away as Kent and Oxford after 15 minutes.
This edition is presented by Kathy Cole, Mark Stewart has the news and I've left the adverts in place so you can see how cheep and cheerful this station was. One of the main stories in the news is the missing teenager Daniel Nolan, he had gone missing just weeks before this was broadcast, his remains were found eight years later.
Portsmouth TV managed to stay on air for a further year after this then ran out of money.
