Chapter 15 - Hellas the proving ground - In Hellas Planitia, the Deimos project’s tripartite committee begins functioning as a practical “Network” engine—solving interoperability by combining Martian risk analysis, Wayfinder salvage/improvisation, Ceres redundancy, and Frontier Corps manual labor. Lyra then discovers a subtle, strengthening resonant pulse in Martian seismic archives—kin to the Ceres “boundary stone” signature—linked to a sealed Hellas quarantine site. Preceptor Vance authorizes a joint reconnaissance as an existential test of the coalition.
The mixed team enters the buried station and finds “crystalline” transformed human bodies and an active hovering Artifact that imposes sterile geometric order on matter. As the Artifact escalates toward a standing wave and begins rewriting local geology, the team executes a containment plan: Frontier Corps runs shielded power cables; Kai and Vorlan assemble a deliberately simple dampening emitter using hybrid components; Lyra tracks frequency drift; Rook uses his sensitivity to “tune” the disruptive counter-frequency. The emitter’s full-power burst destabilizes the Artifact’s resonance, halts geometric propagation, and forces it into dormancy—at the cost of fried components and near-overload—while the deep pulse flatlines. The outcome proves the Network’s operational thesis: protocols alone would have failed, but coordinated strengths can contain non-human “order” threats.
