And since the Rom themselves have been outsiders in many cultures, in order to survive they have had to become masters of the music that audiences in each culture want to hear. Yuri Yunakov is one of the founders of Bulgaria's wildly popular "wedding music" style. A saxophone player of incredible skill, his command of the style's fast-paced, complicated, and shifting time signatures has been known to cause whole rooms full of people to get up and dance "as one."
