Prehistoric birds were extraordinary creatures that connected dinosaurs with the modern birds we see today. The earliest known bird, Archaeopteryx, lived 150 million years ago and showed both reptile-like traits (teeth, claws, long tail) and feathered wings. As millions of years passed, birds evolved into many forms—some with teeth, some capable of strong flight, and others becoming giant runners.
After the dinosaurs went extinct, birds quickly took over new ecological roles. Massive species like Gastornis and the deadly Phorusrhacids (terror birds) dominated land areas, while huge fliers like Argentavis soared through prehistoric skies with wingspans up to seven meters. Aquatic birds such as Hesperornis hunted underwater with toothed beaks, showing how diverse ancient birds had become.
Through evolution, feathers became more aerodynamic, wings stronger, and bird bodies lighter. These adaptations helped birds survive dramatic climate shifts and mass extinctions. Today’s birds are the last living branch of the dinosaur family, carrying millions of years of evolutionary history in their feathers.
