With so many choices on the market it gets difficult picking the right product. Most of us choose a product that is rated for crabgrass control.

The Ginja categorizes pre emergents into three categories.

Group 1 - General Pre emergents with Anti-rooting technology
Prodiamine
Isoxaben
Combined products with Trifluralin (used in preen, prevents rhizome shoots from grass) and Isoxaben (snapshot)

Group 2 - General Pre emergent with anti-rooting and post emergent control for crabgrass
Dithiopyr

Dithiopyr will control crabgrass up to the 3 leaf stage making dithiopyr a valuable spray. The marketing is a little deceiving. Although it does act as a post emergent spray up to the 3 leaf stage for crabgrass and some winter annuals it does not provide any other post emergent services for weeds post germination.

Dithiopyr has excellent anti-rooting properties. It permeates into clay very well. I find it doesn't work as well as an over winter product because of the permeability and I don't recommend it for sandy soils.

Group 3 - General Pre emergent with anti-rooting and post emergent control for annual and biennial weeds
pendimethalin - excellent anti-rooting pre emergent with a post emergent control that kills simple broadleafs. the kicker is the post emergent control disrupts stems of annuals and biennial weeds before they leaf making this a very valuable tool for people with annual and biennial broadleaf weed issues. Sprays are far more effective than the granular counterpart for post emergent control. Pendimethalin will stain.

Mesotrione - Pre emergent properties and a broad list of annual and biennial post emergent weed control. This is a great tool for someone who intends to overseed there lawn. I recommend 2 applications before the overseed. Be sure to pick a warm season or cool season grass that's on the label that won't be effected by the product.
