"In the arenas of war and politics, the term "strawman" refers to a deceptive action or argument designed to mislead, distract, or manipulate opponents and the public. While the classic "strawman argument" is a logical fallacy—misrepresenting an opponent's position to make it easier to attack—"strawman actions" involve creating or exaggerating threats, problems, or adversaries as a means to justify certain policies or to consolidate power.
What Are Strawman Actions?
Strawman actions occur when an individual or group fabricates or overstates an issue, enemy, or threat, often to divert attention from genuine issues or to rally support for their own agenda. In war, this might mean inventing a false pretext for military engagement. In politics, it may involve demonizing a group or inflating the danger posed by a rival or an external force. The goal is to manipulate perceptions, justify controversial actions, or unite people under a manufactured cause." James Exum, November 28, 2025. All rights reserved.
