Invalidation of experiences. When discussions on racism against Indigenous peoples emerge, there’s a tendency for White people to say things like, “we are all human beings” “I don’t see color” “It’s not only Indigenous people who face racism” “they bring it on themselves” “it’s always about race with them” - on an individual level, these kinds of reactions diminish the very real and long-term psychological and physical impacts of racism on Indigenous people. They also redirect racism as an Indigenous problem when it’s not. Racism is a White problem. When we can look critically at the historical and systemic patterns of racism, where it emerged from and how it structures our society, we can start to understand it as such.
