Outline: Today, wheat is the second largest staple crop (after rice) used for human consumption worldwide. By 2050, the human population is expected to reach over 10 billion and demand for wheat is projected to rise. New sources of genetic diversity are essential for improving wheat yield, adaptation to climate change and resistance to biotic stresses.
Stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis Westend. f. sp. tritici Eriks) and stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici Erikss & E. Henning) now pose substantial threats to overall wheat production worldwide, since most rust resistance genes in wheat have been overcome by new virulent rust fungus races, thereby challenging resistance breeding of wheat.
