Here I go over the very basics of combat in pathfinder. I apologize that I skipped over crits, because they are a big part of the game, so I'll quickly mention it here. When rolling a d20 to attack and you roll your crit range and hit (20s always hit) you get a crit threat. You then roll the d20 again to confirm the crit, which means if that second roll would hit you crit. If it wouldn't hit, no crit, but you still hit.
