Our first of two Turkey Day-themed videos takes us back 31 years ago, with the first block of the 11pm news on NBC affiliate WNYT (channel 13) in Albany, NY. The very same station that presents the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and Dog Shows every year for Albany viewers!
Jim Kambrich is sitting in for Ed Dague and Chris Kapostasy, and Bob Kovachick is biting the bullet and working his usual shift. Julie Wilcox and Phil Bayly also have some reports, and from the newsroom, Susan Koeppen. Jim Kambrich had just arrived from Wisconsin that summer, and since he was still a newcomer he was given the holiday shifts. We are now approaching 5 years since his retirement, which was December 4, 2020.
The top stories include the annual Equinox Dinner in Albany, which brings families across the area each Thanksgiving for 5,000 free meals. Another community dinner is held at the United Church of Cohoes. Unfortunately two kitchens suffer fires, one in Nassau and the other in Stillwater. Phil Bayly reports at a ski resort that is one of only two open due to the warmer-than-normal weather temperatures. Plus, we get a glimpse of the Macy's parade, and you can watch commercials I uploaded from that as well, off fellow NBC affiliate WXIA in Atlanta! Some Schenectady middle schoolers attended the parade in the choral section.
I wish they taped the whole show, but we've got another one on tap later today. Go watch this now while you're prepping the turkey, and you can watch the next one when you're doing eating! Interesting seeing Jim Kambrich before he was Jim Kambrich, when he was the face of WNYT's late news (and before that, waking viewers up in the morning before and during the Today Show).
Prime News by Newsmusic Central is the news theme, and Ed Hopkins is the voiceover.
