The Io moth (Automeris io) is native to the Nearctic region and has a wide range that includes the eastern half of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica. The Io moth or peacock moth, is a colorful North American moth in the family Saturniidae. The Io moth is also a member of the subfamily Hemileucinae. The name Io comes from Greek mythology in which Io was a mortal lover of Zeus.Adult Io moths have wingspans of 50-80 mm (approx. 2-3⅛ in.).
Females are larger than males.
Male and female Io moths can be differentiated by the antennae.
The larvae feed on many species of plants, including cherry, redbud, willow, Wisteria, Sassafras, currant, Hibiscus, hickory, poplar, pear, limetree, elm, oak, blackberry, maple, birch, tuliptree, and more.
The adult does not feed.
