Recently, Trump gave a strict warning to foreigners living in the US without proper documents.
Earlier, we had shared that Trump referred to illegal immigrants as ‘aliens’ and said he wanted to remove them from the country. Now, the US Homeland Security department has posted a message on X (Twitter) called ‘Message to Illegal Aliens’. In it, they told all such people to leave the country on their own.
The new rule says that foreign nationals staying for more than 30 days in the US must register with the government. If they don’t follow this rule, they could face heavy fines or even jail.
The department also warned that people who do not follow the rule might be deported (sent back to their home country).
This rule will not affect people with legal visas like H-1B work permits or student visas right now. But the aim of this rule is to make immigration laws stricter.
However, H-1B visa holders who have lost their jobs and are staying beyond their permitted time, and international students who do not follow visa rules strictly, may also get affected.
The penalties for not following the rule are:
Fine of $998 per day if someone stays even after getting a final order to leave
Fine of $1,000 to $5,000 if someone says they will leave but then don’t
Jail time for not self-deporting
Lifetime ban from applying for legal immigration in the future
The US government says self-deportation is safe. The benefits include:
You can choose when to leave and avoid a police case or criminal record
You can keep the money you earned and not face any criminal charge
If you cannot afford travel, you may get a subsidized (discounted) flight
You can still try to immigrate legally in the future
This rule has started a debate around the world, especially in India.
In 2016, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that around 2 crore Bangladeshis were living illegally in India. The number may have gone up since then.
Experts believe that such illegal immigration can be a big danger to India’s national security. It is also said that some of these illegal immigrants are involved in criminal activities.
Now the question is – Should India also take strict steps like the US to send back illegal immigrants?
