Hollenbeck: Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved-Shooting (OIS) which occurred in Hollenbeck Division.

On April 15, 2020, around 10:55 p.m., two officers assigned to the Metropolitan Division were driving a dual-purpose Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) patrolling the area of Savannah Street approaching Cesar Chavez Avenue when they heard gunshots. The officers stopped their SUV at the intersection and immediately observed two suspects running east toward their vehicle on the south sidewalk of Cesar Chavez Avenue. As the suspects reached the intersection and turned to run south on Savannah Street, the officers observed one of the suspects, Santos Orundo, point a handgun at them resulting in an Officer-Involved-Shooting. Both suspects continued running south on Savannah Street and out of view of the officers. A tactical perimeter was established and Suspect Orundo was taken into custody, the second suspect is still outstanding. An article search of the area was conducted and a semiautomatic 9mm pistol was recovered along Orundo's attempted escape route.

Neither officer was injured during this incident. Suspect Orundo was also uninjured.

The subsequent investigation regarding the shots heard by the officers revealed two shooting victims. Both were treated at scene by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) and then transported to Los Angeles County University of Southern California Medical Center (LAC-USCMC). Victim No. 1 succumb to his wounds and died. Emergency surgery was performed on Victim No. 2 and he is currently being cared for in the facility's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and expected to survive.

LAPD's specialized Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. A representative from the Office of the Inspector General responded and monitored the investigation. Central Bureau Homicide is handling the criminal homicide investigation with the assistance of FID's Criminal Apprehension Team (CAT).

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with the LAPD's policies and procedures. Additionally, representatives from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will review the subsequent FID investigation; evidence collected and witness statements to determine if the force used by the officer(s) violated any criminal laws.
