There are more than 10,000 different species or kinds of ants. Ants are found almost everywhere in the world, but they are most common in hot areas. They are usually yellow, brown, red or black . Red and black ants are the most common ones seen in our backyards or gardens too .
The ant's body is made up of three parts , the head , thorax and abdomen. The head is large and the abdomen is slender or thin and oval. The thorax is connected to the abdomen by a small waist . The mouth is an important tool for most ants . It consists of two sets of jaws, the outer pair and the inner pair. The jaws are used for fighting , carrying food and other materials .
Adult ants can’t chew and swallow solid food, well then I am sure you are wondering how they eat? Well, they swallow the juice which they squeeze from pieces of food, and throw away the dry part which is left over. Isn't that clever? Ants also have two antennas on their head. They are very important as they help the ants to hear, taste , touch and smell. They also use these antennas to touch one another and talk to each other in an ant language . An Ants' antennae are actually better at smelling than a human nose. So their sense of smell is very strong!
