In this video I take you through Bavaria, starting at the ruins of Castle Wolfstein, visiting the Wallfahrtskirche Maria Hilf above Neumarkt, stopping at the Löwengrube sandstone quarry near Altdorf, and finishing in the Teufelshöhle cave. Along the way I talk about what it’s like to use the Fujifilm GFX 50R in 2025.
Released in 2018 for $4,500, I finally bought mine used with a small defect for under $2,000 in 2023. What makes still makes special today is not only the adaptability as Ican mount everything from Helios and Pentax lenses to Bronica medium format glass. But also the 50MP medium format sensor, about 70% larger than full frame that produces smooth tones, a wide dynamic range an shallow depth of field. Paired with its rangefinder style design, heavy shutter and film simulations, it feels almost analog. I shoot mostly SOOC with custom recipes like Kodak Gold and Kodak Tri-X, and very much enjoy the digital grain.
Good gear stays good gear. If the GFX 50R was incredible in 2018, it still is now. I’d buy it again in a heartbeat.
