In the past few years, the demand for yellow diamond earrings has grown. They’re fashionable, they have a fairly comfortable price tag, and there are endless unique designs that can be made. The problem is that yellow diamonds, or canary diamonds as some people call them, require more knowledge and specialty, and there is a lot of misinformation out there.
Today I’ll share with you everything you need to know in order to buy yellow diamond earrings, pay the right and appropriate amount, save quite a bit of money on your purchase, where to buy them and lastly what you must beware of...
Although it’s not a registered or official name, pure yellow diamonds of strong yellow hue are also referred to as canary diamonds.
Fancy colored diamonds often have a secondary tone. For yellow diamonds, the tones are usually brown, green, or orange.
When fancy diamonds are graded for color, they’re also graded for intensity. The chart showing the intensity scale for yellow diamonds goes from fancy light yellow all the way to vivid yellow. The problem is that strong is a relative word, so when asked for a canary diamond, one seller might say fancy yellow and above, while another might say fancy intense and above.
Styles of Yellow Diamond Earrings -
In general, there are three leading styles...
Yellow diamond stud earrings are classics, but when the center diamonds are yellow, it adds a fashionable statement. It’s a modern twist to the plain old. As for styling, yellow diamond studs would look great in white gold to show the contrast, as well as in yellow to complement and enhance the yellow color of the diamond.
Yellow Diamond Hoops - If you think one diamond shines, then imagine what happens when you put a bunch of them together? That’s what you get with diamond hoops. And you’d be surprised at how many different designs you can mount diamond hoops. You can use small diamonds or go bigger. You can opt for one row of diamonds, or maybe 2 or 3. The sky's the limit.
Yellow diamond drop earrings really make an impression. The most common design is a center stone. With canary yellow diamonds, it is usually a pear-shaped diamond or elongated cushion cut, surrounded with a delicate white halo, which adds sparkle and contrast. The gold itself can be either yellow or white, either would work beautifully.
Let’s talk about the prices of yellow diamond earrings. When it comes to stud earrings, the studs themselves usually cost anywhere from $150-$500, so the main price comes from the center diamonds.
With hoops, the cost is usually per carat plus a premium for the setting and its design. You need to check exactly how many carats there are, what’s often called tw diamonds, or total carat weight.
Drop earrings are somewhat more complicated because it really depends on the design, but the main cost would be the diamonds.
Yellow diamonds themselves are priced and valued based on the same logic that’s used to price colorless diamonds, and the prices are quite similar to colorless ones. However, when it comes to yellow diamond earrings, these often cost more. This is because it’s super hard to find a matching pair, so with rarity comes a small price premium.
With that being said, although yellow diamonds are rarer than white diamonds, they are still considered to be fairly common in the niche of fancy colored diamonds.
Also, when compared to regular diamonds, the price entry can be even more comfortable even though yellow diamonds are more expensive because you can get away with smaller yellow diamonds and still get earrings that are more noticeable simply due to their color.

Be aware that there are various diamond types out there and beware of fakes. There are ones that are literally fake, like zirconia, which are not diamonds. But there are also other types like lab-grown diamonds and treated diamonds, which are harder to notice and the ones you need to watch out for.
The best way is to only buy from reputable dealers and preferably ones who specialize in fancy color diamonds. As always, it is our recommendation to only buy a fancy color diamond with a GIA certificate, which states the 4 C’s as well as the origin of the diamond, whether treated or natural.
