Chad provides a comprehensive example on how write ground state electron configurations, both the standard electronic configurations and the noble gas configurations. How electrons fill an atom in the ground state is covered first using an orbital diagram with an explanation of the Aufbau Principle, the Pauli Exclusion Principle, and Hund's Rule. Chad then shows how the electron configuration of an element can be determined from the periodic table. The electron configurations to the five most notable exceptions (Cu, Ag, Au, Cr, Mo) to the normal rules are also presented followed by the electron configurations of ions (both cations and anions) including transition metal ions. Finally, it is shown how to determine the number of valence electrons in an atom from its position on the periodic table for main group elements or from an atom/ion's electron configuration. The lesson is concluded by contrasting the ground state and the excited state and what the electron configuration for the excited state of an atom might look like.
