This drum is equipped with a filter system for raising 1000 fish. The waste water from the fish pond is pumped to this filter unit by a submersible pump. Pure water from the filter is pumped into the azolla pond. The water returns from the azolla pond to the fish pond. I have previously presented this unit in a video as I consider this fish farming method really convenient. After watching the video, a lot of friends sent messages and comments saying that they did not understand much about the filter system used in this fish farming unit and wanted to know more. That’s why we thought we could make a short video just about the filter unit of this fish pond. This is a filter unit that can be easily and simply done by anyone. This is a simple farming method of growing fish and the azolla they need together. Through this method of cultivation we have been able to maintain good quality of the water. This is a completely scientifically proven aquaponics farming method. To learn more about this fish farming method, you can click on the above link and watch the previous video that we uploaded.
The purpose of this video is to explain the filter system of the unit in a brief way.
The filter system is made of this visible blue barrel.
This drum has three connections.
First of all, a pipe is provided to carry the waste water from the fish pond to the filter. It is connected to the bottom side of the drum. That is, the water from the pond is carried to the bottom of the filter unit.
Secondly an overflow pipe is provided to carry the purified water from the filter unit to the azolla pond. It is placed approximately 15 cm from the top of the drum. We have made the azolla pond in u shape on three sides of the fish pond. Therefore, the outflow from the filter is split and jumped in two directions.
Third is a drain out valve from the bottom of the filter unit. By opening this valve we can drain out the slurry that has accumulated in the filter to some extent. We use slurry water to irrigate the vegetables.
Now let us see what are the filter medias used for good filtration inside this drum. All of our filter units use bio-sponge as well as fiber net used for filtration. Although a bit expensive.
Using sponge and net in this way has two advantages. Even the smallest microscopic fish waste stays in this sponge and net. Therefore, only clear water reaches the azolla pond.
Secondly, if we use conventional nets and sponges in the filter unit, it may decay in the water very quickly. However, we can use bio-sponge and fiber nets specially made for filter system in aquaculture for a long time without any damage to the unit. No harm has been done to these filter media that we have been using for over a year and a half.

Now let us see how all these filter media are arranged in this one filter barrel.
At the bottom of the drum is a plastic basket. The connection of the water from the pool is given inside it. In addition, the drain out pipe is provided directly below.
Then we stacked the bio sponges on top of this plastic basket. We used 2 bio sponges about 2 inches thick. The sponges should be cut into round shapes and stacked making sure there is no gap on any sides.
On top of that, fiber netting is arranged in several layers.
If you want to replace all this, you can use onion sacks, nets, mosquito nets etc. as mentioned above.
