Robert Parry and his family farmed the area around the Priory for 45 years, and here Robert shares his research with Tim Beech and his personal memories of the site.
It was the first place the fugitive Charles II hid after his defeat by Oliver Cromwell's forces at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, and is only a mile from the famous Royal Oak in which the King hid near Boscobel House.
The Priory was dedicated to St Leonard and the Augustinian nuns were there for around 350 years until the Dissolution under Thomas Cromwell and Henry VIII in 1536. A manor house was later built adjoining the ruins where Charles sought shelter from his enemies, but the house and its associated Gatehouse had vanished by the early nineteenth century. The Priory itself continued as a burial ground for Catholics in the area until the 1840s, but only fragments of the memorial stones remain.
The site is now managed by English Heritage and its management linked to the nearby site at Boscobel House.
