Psalm 63 was written against the backdrop of Absalom's rebellion against King David for his throne, and when Achitophel, one of King David's most trusted advisers, took a leading role in the revolt. As a result, King David had to flee Jerusalem through the Lion's Gate into the wilderness with his men. King David pleads to the Lord God and earnestly seeks Him: "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is" (Psalm 63:1 KJV)
The wilderness times of our lives are never a pleasant thing to go through. However, these difficult times are often the greatest period of blessing spiritually - as Moses, Hagar and Elijah demonstrated - when we truly seek the Lord in our wilderness experience. King David discovered this same truth during his exile from Jerusalem when he longed for God and rejoiced in the truth that he could trust God: "But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped." (Psalm 63:11 KJV) It is here that David learned through scripture and his personal experience that the eternal God is his refuge, and underneath are His everlasting arms (Deuteronomy 33:27 KJV)
