Alyssa Frederick, PhD, is the director of the White Abalone Captive Breeding Program, based at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, in Bodega Bay, California. The program’s mission is to breed a critically endangered and culturally and ecologically important marine snail in captivity, for ultimate reintroduction in the wild. For over a decade, Alyssa has been exploring abalone physiology, reproduction, and the impacts of climate change and disease on abalone. As the program director, Alyssa supervises all spawning and activities in the White Abalone Culture Lab, builds new collaborations while fostering existing ones, coordinates activities between the White Abalone Culture Lab and all of their partner institutions, acquires and administers all funding for the program, and builds inclusive spaces to conduct research that improves white abalone production.
Alyssa received a B.S. in Marine Biology from American University, studied as a Fulbright New Zealand scholar in Wellington, and received a doctorate from the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department of University of California, Irvine. Alyssa has also been a National Geographic Explorer and a Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Academy of Sciences.
