The testes (singular: testis) are the male reproductive glands responsible for producing sperm (spermatogenesis) and the male sex hormone, primarily testosterone. They are located within the scrotum outside the main body cavity to maintain a cooler temperature necessary for healthy sperm development.
Description and Function
Feature Description Function
Location/Structure Paired, oval-shaped organs found in the scrotum. The left testis typically hangs slightly lower than the right. Location outside the body helps regulate temperature for optimal sperm production.
Sperm Production Occurs within highly coiled tubes inside the testes called seminiferous tubules. To produce male gametes (spermatozoa) necessary for sexual reproduction.
Hormone Production Leydig cells (interstitial cells) located between the tubules produce and secrete androgens, mainly testosterone. Testosterone is vital for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics (deep voice, muscle mass, body hair) and maintaining libido, bone density, and muscle strength.
Kenhub provides quick anatomy lessons on testes.
Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Medicine offer reliable information, some of which may be on their YouTube channels.
Content creators focusing on biology for students (e.g., NCERT Biology Class 12) also cover the structure of the testis.
