Valley of Fire has no shortage of stops and amazing things to see. In this video we take a look at a group of some quick stops along the west side of the park and wonder how it can possibly get better.
Valley of Fire State Park has so much to do and see! Today we take a tour of the west side of the park and visit Atlatl Rock, the Beehives, Arch Rock, Petrified Logs West and the Visitor Center where we show you what to expect and give our thoughts on whether you should make the stop or not. Each of these natural features offers unique opportunities to stop and take in the beauty that is Valley of Fire State Park.
Atlatl Rock is located at the north side of Campground Road. This large feature is etched with 4000 year old petroglyphs and provides the chance to get up close to view them. From the parking lot it is just a short walk and climb up a set of metal stairs to the viewing deck where you will be able to see excellent examples of ancient Native American art.
The Beehives are located off Valley of Fire Highway near the west entrance. Let your imagination go wild here as you view these sandstone formations! Different layers of sand and sediment from long ago eras are prominently displayed going in different directions - an excellent example of geology and time at its finest.
Arch Rock is also located on the north end of Campground Rd near Atlatl Rock. Though not large, Arch Rock is another great example of geology and the effects of time and weather as erosion has created this beautiful arch. While visible from the road, the best view can be had by hiking the 2 mile trail to see it from different angles. Due to the fragility of the arch, this formation cannot be climbed on.
The western petrified logs are located off Valley of Fire Highway at the end of a dirt road across from the northern intersection of Campground Rd. These ancient trees are estimated to be around 225 million years old and formed when organic matter is replaced by minerals over time by nature. In order to protect these fossilized specimens, fencing has been placed around them.
The Visitor Center is a great place to start your visit as it provides educational displays on the history of the park, geology, ecology and the history of the region. Inside is also a gift shop where one can purchase souvenirs as well as snacks. The Visitor Center is open from 8:30am to 4:30pm daily.
