The Soufrière Hills volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat erupted for the first time in almost 400 years on July 18, 1995:
Initial stages: The eruption began with intense earthquake swarms and steam explosions.
Lava dome formation: By mid-November 1995, magma reached the surface and formed a new lava dome.
1997 eruption: A major eruption in 1997 killed 19 people and buried the capital city, Plymouth.
Evacuations: Two-thirds of the island's population fled, mostly to the United Kingdom.
Long-term responses: An exclusion zone was established, new roads and an airport were built, and services in the north of the island were expanded.
Volcanic activity continues: The volcano has been relatively quiet since early 2010, but it continues to be closely monitored by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory.
