Honda Civic Hybrid: The Best New Car of the Year?

Let’s test drive and review the 2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hybrid!

The Honda Civic has a long history. The car launched in 1972, right as the demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient cars spiked due to rising fuel prices and the oil crisis. The “Civic” name alluded to Honda’s goal for the car, which was for it to appeal to citizens and city-goers.

In the 2025 model year in America, there are two Civic body styles: a hatchback and a sedan. Between them, every trim is front-wheel drive (FWD) and about half of them are hybrid. 

This video is about the sedan, so we’ll discuss that. The bottom two models are the LX and Sport, and they’re gas-only. Both feature a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 150 horsepower and 133 pound-feet of torque, as well as a continuously variable transmission. The base-model LX trim starts at $24,250, while the Sport starts at $26,250 and gets some add-ons like 18-inch gloss-black alloy wheels and heated side mirrors. 

This is the top-tier Honda Civic Sport Touring Hybrid sedan, and it has a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine with a two-motor hybrid that makes 200 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. That power goes to the front wheels.

The power and torque specs on this car are really important. Honda’s halo Civic is the Type R hot hatch, which makes 315 horsepower and comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.

Honda’s advertising the hybrids as the “most powerful non-Type R Civic[s] ever.” It’s true: They’re more powerful than the Si performance trim, which makes 200 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque.

The Civic is not a plug-in hybrid, so the car charges while it drives. It also has a wild transmission system — it’s not an automatic, a manual, a CVT, or anything else. When you watch the video, I’ve explained the Honda hybrid system in hopefully simple, easy terms.

The 2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hybrid is perhaps the best new car for sale right now. If it’s on your list for new “normal” cars to buy, you might want to delete everything else.
