Question: The following data was obtained from a plate load test carried out on a 60 cm square test plate at a depth 2 m below ground surface on a sandy soil which extends upto a large depth. Determine the allowable load on a 2 m x 2 m column footing with base at a depth of 2 m. The permissible settlement for the foundation is 22 mm and a minimum factor of safety of 3 is required against shear failure. The unit weight of soil determined at the base of the test pit by the core cutter method was 19.61 kN/m3.
