We show you what to pack in your camelbak, backpack or hip pack on every ride so you can fix your bike on the trail and help other stranded riders. You'll have all the essential tools, spare parts, and first aid, to come to anyone's rescue and stop feeling helpless when your bike breaks (not brakes), or people get hurt.
PACK IT AND BE A HERO!
Wether you are going mountain biking for an hour or out shredding for the day, you have to be well prepared. You need to be able to fix your mountain bike, and sometimes you have to perform first aid and fix yourself (or other humans) too!
Have you ever been caught in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire and had nothing to repair it? Breaking a chain is just as bad. Your bike ceases to exist. It becomes a walker. Not cool.
BEING HELPLESS SUCKS.
Hopefully, someone else in your group was well-prepared... and came to your rescue in exchange for your eternal gratitude (and maybe a tasty beverage or a meal, or two, or three).
Luckily, you can avoid being that stranded person in the woods.
Be the responsible one. The one that can help others, the hero.
From air pumps to multitools and bandaids to tick removers, we go over the complete list of necessities a responsible rider should bring with them on a mountain bike ride. Make sure to bring everything you need to fix your bike out on the trail and a kit to fix humans too (first aid).
Coach Ian Hughes goes over his entire riding kit. Shoes, pedals, helmet, eyewear, MTB gloves, bike multi-tool, tire patches, CO2 cartridges, tick remover tweezers, fanny packs, hydration, spare chain links, cash to pay your way out of trouble, air pump, spare tubes, backcountry straps, tire plugs, tire levers, communication devices, first aid kit, rubbing alcohol, face mask, latex gloves, and more!
Special Note:
High quality pedals make a big difference. Grip is important because your foot is a major contact point used to control your bike. Coach Ian discusses the age-old pedal debate: clip-less vs. flat pedals. Which are better? And why?
Pro tip: divide the gear between group members to share the load. You don't need to bring 4 pumps on the same group ride!
In short, build your list of essentials based on this one.
