Sakela Sili is a very important cultural dance of the Kirat Rai community. This dance is performed on the occasion of Sakela festival (also known as “Ubhauli” and “Udhauli”).
Introduction to Sakela Sili
Sakela means “a religious festival to pay homage to the gods and goddesses”.
Sili means “dance moves”.
Therefore, Sakela Sili is a religious and cultural dance to show respect to the gods and goddesses.
Purpose
Through this dance, the Rai community
expresses gratitude to their ancestors and nature,
demonstrates the care of crops, the life cycle, and social traditions through dance movements, and shares collective unity and happiness.
Characteristics of Sili
Both men and women participate in Sakela Sili.
Sili is danced to the rhythm of drums, cymbals, and madals.
The movements of the Sili are related to lifestyles such as farming, herding, sowing, and hunting.
Each movement represents some aspect of life — such as birth, marriage, death, nature, etc.
