Using and Maintaining Your Festool CT26 Dust Extractor | Midtown Chimney Sweeps
(NOTE: This video was produced for our chimney sweeps, so if you are a wood worker, this might not be a precisely accurate description of what you need!)
Welcome to Midtown Chimney Sweeps! In this video, Byron takes you off the rooftop to demonstrate the proper use and care of the Festool CT26 HEPA Dust Extractor, a must-have for keeping your workspace clean and safe when using wood-burning or pellet-burning appliances.
Whether you’re a homeowner or professional, this powerful, German-engineered tool ensures efficient dust collection.
Byron covers everything you need to know: how to source and install a 2-inch Rigid brand vacuum hose from Home Depot, using the locking foot brake, replacing the HEPA filter cartridge, operating manual vs. auto modes for the 110V receptacle, and changing the self-cleaning filter bag. Stay safe, keep your workspace dust-free, and prolong the life of your tools with these expert tips!
Sourcing and Installing a 2-Inch Rigid Brand Vacuum Hose To enhance your Festool CT26’s versatility, you can pair it with a 2-inch Rigid brand vacuum hose, available at Home Depot. This larger hose is ideal for collecting bigger debris, like wood chips, without clogging. To source it, visit your local Home Depot or their website (homedepot.com) and search for “Rigid 2-inch vacuum hose.” Ensure it’s compatible with shop vacuums and has a standard 2-inch diameter. To install, remove the Festool’s standard anti-static hose by twisting the bayonet fitting counterclockwise. Attach the Rigid hose by aligning its connector with the CT26’s inlet and twisting clockwise to secure. Ensure a tight fit to maintain suction power. Note that the Rigid hose isn’t anti-static, so use it for general debris, not fine dust, to avoid static buildup.
Using the Locking Foot Brake The CT26 features a single-point foot brake to prevent unwanted movement, especially on uneven surfaces like rooftops or job sites. To engage, locate the brake pedal near the large wheels at the base. Press down firmly with your foot until it clicks, locking the wheels. This ensures the extractor stays stable during use or when transporting Systainers via the Sys-dock. To release, press the pedal again, and the CT26 will be free to move. This feature is crucial for safety and convenience, allowing easy navigation over obstacles while keeping the unit secure when stationary.
Replacing the HEPA Filter Cartridge The CT26’s HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns, ensuring a clean workspace. To replace it, first unplug the unit. Open the top by releasing the locking clips and lifting the lid. Locate the flat HEPA filter above the collection area. Lift the green “active” handle and pull the filter straight up to remove it. Insert a new Festool HEPA filter (part number available at festoolusa.com) by aligning it and pressing down until secure. Replace the lid and lock the clips. Regular replacement extends the filter’s life and maintains suction efficiency, especially for hazardous dust like silica.
Manual vs. Auto Modes for the 110V Receptacle The CT26’s 110V receptacle offers tool-triggered auto-start and manual modes. In auto mode, plug your power tool (e.g., sander or saw) into the receptacle. When you activate the tool, the extractor starts automatically, syncing dust collection with tool use for efficiency and noise reduction. Switch to manual mode via the control dial for continuous suction, ideal for shop cleanup. Adjust suction power (five levels) to match tasks—lower for sanding, higher for routing. This flexibility saves energy and optimizes performance.
Changing the Self-Cleaning Filter Bag The CT26’s self-cleaning fleece filter bag prevents caking, maintaining suction until full. To change it, unplug the unit, open the locking clips, and remove the top. Fold the lever to release the retainer, then pull out the used bag. Dispose of it safely (check local regulations for hazardous dust).
Install a new Festool CT26 filter bag (part #496187) by placing it over the container edge, ensuring contacts are free. Replace the top and secure the clips. These bags trap particles down to 5 microns, extending HEPA filter life.
