An Honest Review of Susanna Clarke's PIRANESI

"Piranesi" follows our protagonist of the same name as he exists in a world of rooms, halls and vestibules. The labyrinth seems to extend for miles, each hall only similar to the next by the display of statues within them. Aside from that, the rooms are all different: some having windows where others do not, some have all four walls where others only have enough fragments of support to hold up the ceiling, and some do not have any openings at all aside from the door. Those that have existed within Piranesi’s world come to the grand total of 15 beings, however 13 of those are already deceased - only their bones remain within the labyrinth, continually being remembered and cared for by Piranesi. There is only one other person who is living in this world, a man who Piranesi refers to as “The Other”.

As the story unfolds and Piranesi begins to understand the labyrinth he lives in more, not everything appears to be as simple as he once thought. With the entrance of a new person called 16, the dark truth unveils itself of how the world came to be and what Piranesi’s vital role within it really is.
