H is a tall, steady letter in the alphabet.
It looks like two parallel lines, connected in the middle by a short crossbar — like a bridge between two towers.
In sound, H is a breathy consonant, made by softly exhaling air through your throat without using your voice.
H begins many familiar words:
house, hand, heart, horse, home, happy.
It’s found in the middle of words, too: behind, perhaps, uphill.
Sometimes H stays silent, as in hour, honest.
