Start: Same as Static Standing. Instructions: Patient sways past the limits of the ankle strategy, requiring use of the hips and hands to help regain balance. If balance loss is posterior, the patient extends at the back/hips and raises the hands up and forward. Conversely, if the balance loss is anterior, the patient flexes at the hips and the hands extend up and back to help regain balance. Finish: At end of predetermined time period or stopped early if patient is unable to remain steady at least 20% of exercise time. Benefit: Hip strategy is effective for correction of moderate balance disturbances. This exercise helps develop awareness of balance limits and builds coordination and strength around the hips for balance recovery. Variations: Lateral hip strategy—patient side bends toward the direction of balance loss and raises hand on the contralateral side.
