This year, we are highlighting the print media by performing a "newspaper march" at each concert. Most famously, in 1889, Sousa was hired to compose a march for a ceremony sponsored by the Washington Post. The Washington Post march was an immediate hit, and help vault its namesake newspaper past the more established Washington Times in circulation. In the decades to come, newspaper marches became a genre unto itself. The Washington Times didn't follow suit until 1902. This march was composed by the leader of the Washington Times Newsboys, an internal band.
